Is Social Media giving you results?

social media madnessHave you been busy getting a ton of Facebook likes, or spending a lot of time on Twitter ? Or maybe you’re trying to figure out how to make Linked In work for you?

Here’s the thing, stop right now, it won’t work!

So now I have your attention, let me explain….

Social media is an essential aspect of your marketing, but selling rooms directly from social media won’t work. Social media is social….. people are interacting with you, asking questions, commenting on your posts, but are unlikely to book a room with you there and then.

Your job is to get them off the social media sites and onto your database, where you can start building a relationship with them, finding out what they need, being their advisor and building trust and goodwill.

This step is pretty much ignored by most hospitality businesses, but it’s crucial if you’re going to make all that time spent on those sites worth it for you.

So how do you do that?

There are many ways to do it, so I’m just going to give you three right now:

  • Invite them to a specific webpage where they can “opt in” to your list, making sure to give them something in return for their precious name and email address
  • Create something of value for your ideal guests, and put a special tab on your Facebook page, where they can download it and get to know you
  • Publicise this valuable piece of content that you have created in your profiles on all the social media sites.

Your job is to build your list. Your list of guests AND your list of prospects. Without this list (which you own, and is NOT on any social media site, third party booking site or reservation system) you don’t have a business. I hate to be harsh, but it’s the truth. No-one else will tell you that.

And when you have that list, nurture it, guard it and feed it like your life depended on it, because it does. No-one will tell you that either.

So before you rush out and pay someone to get you more likes on Facebook, or post tweets on your behalf, think again. How are you going to get interested people OFF those sites and onto YOUR LIST?
