Fundamentals v bright shiny objects

PD imageAround 10 years ago, fresh out of personal development and wealth creation school (!), I started a business with a new friend, empowering women to use their passions to grow businesses and become wealthy.

After about a year, my new friend and I realized that it was a bad idea to be working together, so I moved on and left her to it.  It’s a long story for another day….

However, what I did have was a small mailing list, which I used to kick-start my B&B business after returning to France in 2009.

Last week, I got a booking from someone on that list.

For over 10 years I had kept in touch and she had stayed on my mailing list!

Then one day, the moment arrived when she wanted to visit my area and I was “top of mind” for her.  It was kinda natural for her to book with me.  Like obvious really.

Over on the Facebook group there’s a conversation going on about another new social networking strategy that some of the members are getting excited about.  It could well be the next big thing.  We just don’t know yet.

It’s not that I’m skeptical about it, it’s just that without the fundamentals in place, these bright shiny objects are a waste of your time.

In my experience very few people have the fundamentals in place, so let me remind you what they are in terms of marketing online….

  1. Build a list
  2. Stay in contact with that list
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 forever

That’s it!

So I hear you asking, how do you build a list?

Here’s how…

  1. Create some content that your potential guests would find very useful
  2. Offer it to them at every turn, on your website, on your social media profiles, in your email signature, in fact ALL OVER THE PLACE!
  3. Ask for their name and email address in exchange for your lovely content

This is online marketing 101 but so desperately overlooked in this industry, while people prefer to grab at the next straw in the form of another online travel agent, directory, social media thing or anything that takes away the pain of having to learn something new.

There’s a reason why websites have pop ups (whether you like them or not)

There’s a reason why there’s a ton of people online offering you their free stuff.

There’s a reason why names and email addresses are still the most precious commodity in your business

Without these fundamentals in place, you’ll fall prey to any bright shiny object beaming down on you

(rant over)

I’m so passionate about this online marketing malarkey because I know how much it can change your business (and your life) when you master it.  I know this from first hand experience, and I know it from the work I do with my clients.

It works every time.
